Microsoft to replace Zune with a ‘Spotify-like’ Xbox Live music service

Apparently Microsoft is going to revamp their music service sometime this year, replacing the Zune branding with the Xbox Live branding instead.

According to CNET, Microsoft is already in talks with music labels to change their current agreements to support the new service.

The branding would be across Xbox, Windows Phone and Windows and would be a relaunch as a simpler, better integrated service similar to Spotify, but might include a video component as well. Any current Zune Pass subscribers would be able to keep their current subscriptions as well, so no disruptions would occur.

Microsoft would be hoping to have things all ready in time for the holiday season later this year, and offer the Xbox Live for Windows subscriptions free to new PC Buyers to increase adoption of the service.

Zune was a massive flop, imho, so rebranding would be a very good idea. I hope this one turns out to be true y’all.

So try it….

Land Rover

Land Rover

Long before domestic brands put luxury and off road prowess in the same sentence there was Great Britain’s Range Rover. The large, upper crust 4x4s of the Land Rover empire were, and still are, the all-terrain choice of royalty. But, Land Rover has never been able to infuse a small utility with that same posh and capable mix. Neither the Freelander nor LR2 were a success here. So, in the best tradition, they’re trying again. Welcome to the Range Rover Evoque.

The ultra-modern looking 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque utility is available as both a sleek 3-door and as an only slightly more conservative 5-door crossover. We chose the sportier 3-door for our test, as it is truly unlike anything else in the small utility segment. Riding on a compact wheelbase of 104.8-inches, about 3-inches less than the Range Rover Sport, the unibody Evoque looks more sport-coupe than crossover. Our 3-door’s Stornoway-Grey paint job is one of the more sedate colors of the 12 available, and while the white roof is optional, the Full Fixed Panoramic Glass panel that it surrounds is standard.

Clearly, designers put a lot of their passion into the Evoque’s design, with a fast windshield, rising beltline, wraparound greenhouse, and optional 20-inch wheels. It even looks sporty from the rear, with a high-mounted spoiler, small clear-lens tail lights, and lower rear diffuser.  The thunder under the hood comes from a small, but potent 2-liter I4. Turbo-charged and direct-injected, it puts out a stout 240-horsepower and 251 pound feet of torque.

Mated to a standard 6-speed automatic transmission, it was good for a swift 0-60 time of just 6.7-seconds at our test track. The quarter mile passed in an equally spirited 15.1-seconds at 92 miles-per-hour. There’s no turbo-lag at launch, and steady power with firm shifts make for an enjoyable trip down the 1320. It still sounds like a 4-cylinder, but a good one.

Steering is electric assisted and provided a nice, firm feel and quick turn-ins through our slalom course. The back end is a little looser than we’d like, but it does help you rotate this ute in a hurry. And, the optional MagneRide damping system, with Active Dynamics in “sports” setting, keeps body roll to a minimum.

Evoque buyers will have a choice of 3 exterior and interior design themes; Pure, Premium, and Dynamic. Our top-of-the-line Dynamic sported nice looking leather throughout, with contrasting stitching and aluminum trim. Seats are comfortable, and there’s more room in the cabin than it first appears which is also the case in the rear. The 3-door’s folding back seats are not the easiest to access…the 5-door solves this issue…but once you’re in, there’s an unexpected amount of space, including leg-room.

But, where utility vehicles are concerned, there’s always a price for style. Behind the standard power lift-gate you’ll find room for just 19.4 cubic-feet of cargo. Folding the rear seats will get you 47.6 cubic-feet of space, but both numbers are among the worstin class.

While we all know Range Rover’s see much more pavement than dirt, there is a heritage to uphold; and all Evoques come with a full-time all-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled Haldex center differential to nearly instantly distribute power where it’s needed most. Also standard is Land Rover’s Terrain Response System, with settings for Snow or slippery conditions, Rutty trails, and Sand.  With Hill Descent Control, Gradient Release Control, high ground clearance, and steep approach and departure angles, the Evoque is certainly capable of more than most buyers will ever throw at it.

Ride quality falls more to the sporty side of the sport-luxury equation, with a solid composure that gives the Evoque the feeling of a much larger SUV. Government Fuel Economy Ratings are 18-City and 28-Highway.  We averaged a fine 25.8 miles-per-gallon of Premium fuel. The Energy Impact Score is an average one, at 15.6 barrels of oil consumed per year while producing a Carbon Footprint of 8.5 annual tons of CO2.

Regrettably, all this style and luxury does not come cheap, with a base price of $44,995 for the Coupe. The 5-door is actually cheaper, starting at $41,995. Both are pricey for compact utes, but are also extremely well equipped.

The 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is as much form as function, and it’s a great form at that. But, moreover, the elusive goal of mixing Range Rover luxury with Land Rover capability in a small utility seems to have been achieved. And that alone ensures that this proper import will “evoke” a lot of attention.

The HP TouchSmart 600-1055 PC ($1,599 list) is HP’s third generation of TouchSmart PCs for the home. HP pioneered touch computing for the home and each successive generation has gotten better. The latest model combines HP’s Touch experience with Microsoft’s support built into Windows 7 (a.k.a., Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7). The result is a system that I can finally recommend without reservation to both the touch aficionado and the average home user, and earns it our Editors’ Choice for mainstream all in one desktops.

Apple Mac Mini 2011

  • Apple Mac Mini 2011 Review

Apple Mac

The Mac mini got its annual update a while back, adding a few expected changes to the spec sheet. First among them was an upgrade to the new Intel Sandy Bridge series of processors. Secondly, it was the addition of the new Thunderbolt connectivity port. However, there were also a few changes, such as dropping the NVIDIA GPU in favor of Intel and AMD combo. The Mac mini also no longer has an internal SuperDrive, which has created space for an optional additional hard drive.

How good is the new Mac mini? We got the base 2.3GHz model and decided to find out.

Design
The Mac mini is a beautiful machine. It’s amazing how much Apple has managed to fit inside such a tiny space. The design is identical to last year’s model but one notable omission is the lack of a slot loading SuperDrive on the front, which makes it look like the server edition. All that’s left on the front side is the infrared receiver for the Apple Remote and an LED indicator for power.

The sides are just as barren as before and everything is located on the back. This is not the most convenient location, especially for the USB ports and makes simply sliding in a USB drive a lot of hassle.

The number of ports on the back remains identical to the last model, save for one replacement. You still get four USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port, Ethernet, HDMI, power, audio in/out and SD card slot. The Mini DisplayPort, however, has been replaced by Thunderbolt. Developed by Intel, this new port has a bandwidth of 10Gbps in both directions and allows you to daisy chain multiple compatible accessories, all through just one port. Being based on PCI-E, it supports a wide range of devices and is backward compatible with USB and FireWire, provided you use the right adaptors.

At the bottom is a lid that gives the user access to the replaceable RAM on the Mac mini. This is the only user-replaceable part on the mini, with everything else, including the hard drive requiring a trip to the store to get replaced. The base model that we were testing came with only 2GB of RAM but can be increased to 8GB.

One of the disadvantages of the all-aluminum design is the constant electric current that runs through the body. It’s not high enough to electrocute someone but still gives an unpleasant sensation when touched. This is similar to the feeling you get when you touch a MacBook Pro while it is charging. For what it’s worth, the Mac mini rarely ever gets hot and it’s also amazingly quiet. So much so that you will never, ever hear it running no matter how quiet your surroundings are.

The bundle that you get with the new Mac mini is rather skimpy. All you get in the box apart from the machine is a power cable, HDMI to DVI adaptor and the user guide. Apple stopped providing the remote a while back and the software DVDs are also gone since the current version has no DVD drive. There is no USB flash drive as well such as the one provided with the previous generation MacBook Air. The Mac mini has a Recovery mode which you can boot into in case you need to reinstall the OS, so there is no need for one.

Hardware and Software
The latest generation Mac mini comes in three configurations. The base model has a 2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 2GB RAM, 500GB hard drive and Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 288MB of shared video memory.

The second variant has a 2.5GHz dual-core Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, same 500GB hard drive and AMD Radeon HD 6630M GPU with 256MB of dedicated video memory.

Finally we have the server edition, which has a 2.0GHz quad-core Core i7 processor, 4GB RAM, dual 500GB 7200-rpm hard drives and Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of shared video memory.

You also get customization options so that you can expand the RAM to up to 8GB and upgrade the hard drive to 750GB 7200-rpm drives. On the second model you can also opt for a 2.7GHz Core i7, 256GB SSD or a 256GB SSD + 750GB HDD combo.

The Mac mini comes with Mac OS X Lion pre-installed (the server comes with the server edition of Lion). Along with all the default applications, you also get the iLife ‘11 suite, which includes iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand. The new Mac App Store is a nice addition and makes finding and downloading apps on to the Mac extremely easy but it has this annoying habit of repeatedly asking you the password to your account before you can download anything. There should have been a way to disable this.

New additions such as Mission Control and Launchpad are useful too, particularly the latter which I found myself using a lot more than I expected to. Auto save, Versions and Resume are also good to have although currently not a lot of third-party apps support them. AirDrop will be convenient if you have another Mac in the house running Lion and Full-Screen Apps is something that should have been there from Day 1.

Performance
The Mac mini was tested using a Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW monitor with 1920 x 1080 resolution and a Logitech keyboard and mouse. As usual, using a Windows keyboard with the Mac can be bit difficult due to some of the keys getting their functions changed. So the Windows logo key becomes Command and Alt key becomes Option. This can take a bit getting used to. Also, if you have a mouse with side buttons, they won’t work on the Mac by default. All you can use is the left/right/center click and the scroll wheel.

Moving over to the actual performance, this is one area where Macs usually do not disappoint. Despite what the specifications might suggest they usually offer a satisfactory experience thanks to the software and hardware being optimized for one another.

Unfortunately, this is not the case with the base Mac mini. This machine just screams for more RAM and for the price at which it sells, Apple could have easily put in 4GB. With just 2GB, Lion tends to quickly run out of breath even if you launch just a couple of applications. This results in stuttering and sluggish performance, with the dreaded beachball adding insult to injury. The CPU on the base Mac mini is fairly capable but you won’t be able to realize its full potential unless you upgrade the RAM.

The GPU is also not something to write home about. Unless you plan to play old games at low resolutions or with the details turned down the performance is quite poor. Simply put, this machine is not for gaming. For that you’ll need to get the more expensive 2.5GHz model that comes with the AMD 6630M GPU and 4GB RAM. Or better yet, get a Windows-based PC.

The lack of an optical drive can often be quite annoying. You don’t need it often but on those rare occasions that you do you really wish it was there. It also hurts Mac mini’s prospects as a HTPC since DVD playback is out of the question. Apple has the iTunes store in the US where you can buy or rent movies and TV shows from but for us, in India, it is not an option. This leaves you with few choices to get movies or videos on the Mac mini and most of them aren’t legal.

Verdict
At Rs. 33,900, the base Mac mini is the cheapest Mac you can buy in India today. It can be a great second computer for the house or even as a download machine, thanks to its low power consumption and tiny form factor. But as a serious everyday computer the Mac mini fails to impress. The hardware is too weak for anyone but the most non-demanding user to offer satisfactory performance. It’s also not particularly good at being an HTPC due to the lack of an optical drive. If you want to buy the Mac mini, my advice would be to skip the base model and go for the 2.5GHz model instead.

Much interesting…

SONY VAIO Z SERIES

SONY VAIO Z SERIES

The good: Light and sturdy design; large SSD hard drive; switchable discrete graphics; excellent performance.

The bad: Expensive; switchable graphics options can be confusing.

The bottom line: Sony’s top-of-the-line 13-inch Vaio VPCZ116GX/S has a speedy Core i5 CPU, discrete graphics, a huge 256GB SSD, and a sky-high price to match.

Though most laptop shoppers may be laser-focused on value, snapping up $300 Netbooks and $600 ULV systems, there’s always a little room at the top of the heap for a high-priced, full-featured showpeice. In the 13-inch category, HP has the Envy 13, Dell has the Adamo XPS, and Sony has the Vaio Z series.

In this latest refresh, the Vaio Z has a very fast Intel Core i5 processor, an Nvidia GT 330M GPU, which can be switched off to save battery life, a DVD drive (something missing from those other high-end 13-inch laptops), and a huge 256GB SSD hard drive, which is no doubt a big part of the $2,299 price (although it’s not yet available for sale at the time of this review).

Sony is always good.

Price aside, the Vaio Z may be our new 13-inch laptop of choice, as it breezed by many other recent 13-inch systems we’ve tested, which all use older Intel CPUs (or slower low-voltage ones). The trade-off is in battery life, even with the system automatically changing power profiles as needed with its Dynamic Hybrid Graphics System (which is a fancy name for the integrated/discrete graphics switch).

Unfortunately, the Vaio Z116 priced out of range for most consumers, but if you get an opportunity to test-drive one, we highly recommend it.

Price as reviewed $2,299
Processor 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 M520

Dimensions (WD) 12.4 x 8.3 inches
Height 1.3 inches
Screen size (diagonal) 13.3 inches
System weight / Weight with AC adapter 3.0/3.9 pounds
Category Thin and Light

Compared with the ubiquitous 13-inch MacBook Pro, the Sony Vaio Z is not quite as thin, but it’s definitely lighter. Despite the full-power processor, its body feels more like a ULV system, which generally trade horsepower for size and energy efficiency. The chassis is a mix of brushed metal and magnesium, making for an end product that feels airy but sturdy at the same time.

That said, the design tilts a little industrial, with black keys against a silver finish, a two-tone base, a blocky raised wrist rest panel, and a bulky metal slider for the switchable graphics. It feels like it belongs in a ’90s industrial art space/coffee house. It’s not unpleasant to look at in any way, but our tastes have moved toward devices that emphasize unibody construction (or at least try to simulate that look).

Sony’s typical raised-island-style keyboard is here, although in this 13-inch design the key faces feel just a little too small and too widely spaced for our fingers. Important keys such as Shift and Tab are generously sized and we found no major problems with the logic of the keyboard layout. We’d award bonus points for the backlit keys, always a feature we appreciate, but for $2,000 it had better be a standard feature. The Vaio Z’s touch pad is likewise excellent, offering plenty of space and small, but effective, left and right mouse buttons separated by a fingerprint reader.

For years we’ve dinged Sony for its bloatware and adware-filled systems, but the company has toned its act down of late. The Vaio Z shoves only a handful of marketing come-ons at you, including one labeled “Secure your Vaio rewards,” which in our case was an offer to buy a one-year license for Norton security and LoJack for laptops software for $99.

Three quick-launch buttons sit above the keyboard. One launches a built-in suite of Sony supportresources and troubleshooting apps and easy access to tech support contact info. The second is user assignable, and the third launches Sony’s Media Gallery software, which is a perfectly fine collection of media organizing and playback tools, but does require you to learn a new piece of software if you’re already familiar with popular products such as iTunes or Windows Media Player.

Above the keyboard on the left side is a three-way switch that controls power profiles and principally turns the Nvidia GeForce 330 graphics on or off. The settings are labeled “speed” and “stamina,” and it can be confusing as to what the switch actually does if you’re not familiar with the concept of switchable graphics. There’s also a third position, named “auto,” that turns the GPU off when you unplug the laptop.

Of course, the entire point is largely moot, as Nvidia’s new Optimus technology finally allows your laptop to turn its discrete GPU on and off on the fly, without making the screen blink off for a second, or requiring you to quit any apps. In our recent hands-on tests, it was completely seamless, and makes every other method for switching between graphics chips outdated. Though this model doesn’t offer Nvidia Optimus technology, we don’t see any reason it couldn’t be included on a near-future refresh.

The 13.3-inch wide-screen LED display has a 1,600×900-pixel native resolution. That’s what we’d expect in an upscale 13-inch laptop; less-expensive 13-inch systems often have 1,280×800-pixel or 1,366×768-pixel displays. The higher resolution makes it good for 720p video, and gives you plenty of desktop real estate.

Sony Vaio VPCZ116GX/S Average for category [thin-and-light]

The Vaio Z116 has a standard set of ports and connections for a 13-inch laptop, although for $2,300, we’d expect a Blu-ray drive. Still, it’s impressive the system manages to fit in an optical drive at all; it’s a feature missing from HP’s 13-inch Envy, Dell’s 13-inch Adamo XPS, and even Toshiba’s T-135.

We’ve seen a handful of laptops with Intel’s Core i5 mainstream CPU, and so far have been very impressed with its performance. The Vaio Z116 is no exception, and the 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 M520 ran our multitasking test around twice as fast as the HP Envy 13 we reviewed back in September 2009, which had a 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SL9600. We checked HP’s Web site to see if the Core i5 had been added as a configuration option for the Envy, but it hadn’t.

Also rare in a 13-inch laptop are discrete graphics. In this case, turning on the switchable Nvidia GeForce GT 330M GPU gave us 57.2 frames per second in Unreal Tournament 3 at 1,440×900 pixels. This isn’t a PC gaming powerhouse, but it can certainly handle any current game at middle-of-the-road resolutions and quality settings.
